Hair colour causes real allergic reactions, sometimes severe ones. A test 48 hours beforehand is the manufacturer's instruction and our insurer's condition. If you want colour today and have not been tested, the answer is no — including before a wedding.
No colour without a valid patch test, and no chemical service on hair that will not take it.
Colour, highlights and toning, carried out only after a valid allergy alert test.

Her Hair My Head Ltd is a private limited company registered in England and Wales under company number 13406076, based at Sundridge near Sevenoaks in Kent and working since May 2021. The work is hairdressing: cutting and styling, colour, condition and repair, and proper consultation before anything is committed to.
One rule governs everything. Oxidative hair colour contains dyes, including paraphenylenediamine, which cause real allergic reactions, occasionally severe and in rare cases anaphylactic. Every manufacturer's instruction requires an allergy alert test at least forty-eight hours before a colour service, and our insurer treats that as a condition of cover. So no colour happens without a valid test, we retest when the product or brand changes, we retest after any previous reaction however mild, and we ask specifically about black henna temporary tattoos because those frequently contain the same dye and raise the risk considerably. We also do not diagnose scalp conditions or hair loss; those go to a GP or dermatologist.
Not if you have not had a patch test, and we are sorry. The test has to be at least forty-eight hours before, because that is how long a delayed allergic reaction takes to show. Colouring without it risks a reaction on your wedding day and leaves you with no insured recourse. Book the test now and we will fit the colour in as soon as the window allows.
Yes, each time, and again if we change product or brand. Sensitisation can develop at any point, including after years of uneventful colouring, which is exactly why the test is per-service rather than once. It takes a few minutes at a free consultation.
It matters a great deal and we need to know. Black henna frequently contains paraphenylenediamine, the same dye family used in permanent colour, and exposure can sensitise you to it. Clients with that history are at materially increased risk of reacting, so please tell us at consultation rather than afterwards.
Sometimes, and sometimes not in one appointment or at all without damage. Previously lightened or box-dyed hair has limits, and pushing past them breaks hair rather than lifting it. We would rather show you what is realistically achievable and plan over a few months than deliver something that snaps.
No, and please be wary of a salon that says it can. We do not diagnose or treat conditions of the scalp or skin, and we will refer you to a pharmacist, GP or dermatologist. We may also defer a service until it has been looked at, because applying chemicals to inflamed skin makes things worse.
Stop the service, tell us immediately, and seek medical advice — urgently if there is any swelling of the face, lips or throat. A negative test substantially reduces the risk but does not eliminate it, and anyone who tells you a test makes colour completely safe is overstating it.
Book a free consultation and patch test. The colour appointment comes forty-eight hours later.
